Xiaomi Mix 4 Review: Best Android Phone So Far?

The Xiaomi Mix 4 is one of Xiaomi’s best releases in 2021 in terms of flagship quality smartphones. It stands out as a stiff competitor against the Mi 11. But what makes the Mix 4 so special?

Let’s find out together!

Xiaomi Mix 4 Review

  • Design

At first glance, this device is a beauty to behold. It’s a pretty-looking design and for me, the best I’ve seen on a Xiaomi flagship in recent times.

At 8mm thickness, we get an all-ceramic build which gives it that premium feels and look. The edges are nicely cut out at the rear and also at the front where we get the interesting display.

The rear houses the Xiaomi branding inscribed close to the bottom. At the top, we’ve got the triple camera setup plus flash which is housed by a huge bump. Without a case, this device will definitely rock on flat surfaces when operated.

For the I/O, we’ve got the dedicated nano sim slot at the top alongside the stereo speakers. There’s no headphone jack but the Mix 4 does come with a dongle to help you connect to your wired headphones using the USB-C port.

Both the sides of Mix 4 are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. It’s also IP53 certified to keep dust and splashes at bay. The design is my best feature of this device alongside the display which captured my attention at first glance.

  • Display

The display of this device really makes it unique. No curved edges, it’s just it — a full-screen display.

Very significantly, you’ll notice that there is no camera cut-out on Mix 4. It houses an in-display camera and fingerprint scanner. By merely looking at the device from a distance, it’s difficult and even impossible to see the camera through the display.  You’ll need to get really close and maybe see it through a well-positioned angle.

It’s a full HD AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It also supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+.  It’s protected by Gorilla Glass Victus which also makes it scratch resistant.

Navigating this display with one hand would be difficult even if you’ve got large hands. Thankfully, you can always switch to the one-handed mode or go all-in into the huge 6.67-inch screen real estate.

For me, this seems to be the ideal display. Getting to watch videos on full screen with no interruption from the hole cut-out or teardrop camera is one thing I’ve missed for a long time. Would this become a trend? Obviously, it would. Who doesn’t want that immersive experience you get from utilizing the entire screen?

Huge credit to Xiaomi, they nailed it on this one for me even though it’s FHD and not QHD.

  • Performance

As far as chipsets go, the Xiaomi Mix 4 is the first device to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ processor. As expected, this device delivers the goods in terms of all-around performance, day in, day out.

With a huge RAM, switching and navigating between apps is a breeze. And as for gaming, you get some of the best gaming performance. It’s not a gaming-focused device like the ROG Phone, so keep your expectations in check.

With such a beautiful display and design, you’d need a performance to complement things and that’s what you get on here. A solid all-around performance. You don’t get to miss out on anything and that’s great.

One thing to keep in mind though is how the device gets to heat up during use. The Snapdragon 888+ gets really hot when used which is a letdown coming from the 865+. But switching down to a 60Hz refresh rate would do some good. Pick your poison!

  • Camera

These days, smartphone cameras are getting better with each release. And Xiaomi is not letting its guard down, they’ve got some of the better smartphone cameras out there. The focus isn’t on camera, but rather on giving you a well-rounded experience.

The Mix 4 packs some of the best camera specs for its price. Of course, at the price, you’ve got to deliver and boy did the Mix 4 deliver well.

Not entirely the standard of the Pixels and iPhones, but you can get good-looking shots on this device. The hardware and software work together to produce some of the best picture quality.

As expected, we’ve got the usual suspects at the rear end of the device. The 13MP ultrawide lens, the 8MP periscope telephoto lens, and the 108MP main lens. The rear allows for 5X optical zoom. We’ve also got Laser Auto Focus, Optical Image Stabilization, and Electronic Image Stabilization for videos.

You can go as high as shooting 8K videos on this device at 24fps. You could as well settle for 4K at 30 or 60fps. There’s also a 1080p shooting mode at either 30, 60, 120, or 480fps. All these combine to produce some of the best reels from a smartphone.

But you don’t get the same quality with the in-display selfie camera. It’s a 20MP wide lens that shoots 1080p videos at 30fps. The selfies taken here do beat a lot of devices in terms of details captured.

  • Storage

With 8K and 4K video support, it’s a no-brainer to provide sufficient storage space, and Mix 4 packs of all of it.

You’ve got three storage options, you could go for the base 128GB, or take this a notch higher with the 256GB or 512GB variants. If you do shoot a lot of photos and videos, the base variant might not be your best option as it’ll get filled in no time.

As for the RAM, you’ve got two variants — the 8GB and 12GB RAM variants. Both are standard in my opinion. Personally, I’ll be going for the 8GB variant because I don’t do tasks requiring up to 12GB of RAM. Either way, you’re assured of getting the best in terms of storage here.

  • Battery

Another exciting facet of the Xiaomi Mix 4 is the battery. Definitely not your battery champ but the fact that you can get your juice refilled in no time makes it exciting.

It’s a 4500mAh Li-Po cell that should go a full day with you on mild use. Heavy users will have a hard time using 100% in a day. The high refresh rate, the huge screen, and the SoC which gets heated up quickly will take a toll on this device before the day runs out.

Thankfully, Xiaomi has included a 120W charging brick in the box of this device. This charges the Mix 4 from 0 – 100% in just under 30 minutes. There’s also wireless charging support at 50W which should get you a full charge in just 30 minutes.

So as long as power goes, you can’t go wrong on this device. It’ll definitely get you through most of the day.

Conclusion: Is Xiaomi Mix 4 Worth Buying?

This is by far one of the best smartphone releases of this year. It’s a huge competitor to the Mi 11 Pro and other flagships.

Quite a solid device in terms of all-around build quality, performance, display, camera, and battery life. The Stand-out feature for me has to be the uninterrupted full screen which gives this device that unique look and feel.

Moving forward, I hope we continue getting these sorts of designs by not just Xiaomi, but other OEMs as well.
